Do Your Own Thing

17 Mar

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’ve managed to make a living at blogging and speaking despite not doing what some of the experts say to do. This has happened for me because of two things. First, I work my ass off. Second, I believe in this mantra that I have written on board in my office, “be true to yourself today.” Part of being true to myself every day includes communicating with people in the same manner that I want to be communicated with. For me that means not not giving a “hard sell” on my services. That has cost me money in the short-term, but I’m in this for the long-term which is where I’ll ultimately profit.

One of the ways to determine what does or does not “works” for you is to treat your blog as a social experiment. Experiment with style of your blog posts until you find the one that works for you and your readers. Try different approaches to your Tweets or blog post headlines until you find one that you’re comfortable using and that yield the kind of response you want.

At the end of the day it’s your blog and you can do with it what you want. Yes, there are some basic guidelines you should use, but you get to choose which ones you want to follow. Choose what works for you then work with it.

Richard, what are some of those guidelines that we should choose to follow or not? 🙂

That’s a great question. I’ll share those in Sunday’s post.
